The Zenza Bronica S2A represents the mechanical peak of Zenzaburo Yoshino’s ambitious vision to create the world's most versatile medium format system. Often dubbed the "Hasselblad of Japan," the S2A was the refined successor to the S2, featuring a "beefed up" internal gear mechanism to resolve the winding issues of earlier models. It remains a heavyweight icon of 1970s engineering, beloved for its ability to pair legendary Nikon optics with a modular, 6x6 square format workflow.

Innovative Mechanical Integration

Unlike traditional medium format SLRs of its time, the S2A was built with a series of unique mechanical solutions designed to overcome common design limitations:

  • Downward Mirror Stroke: In a radical departure from standard design, the S2A’s reflex mirror slides down and forward into the floor of the camera. This allows the rear elements of wide-angle and specialized lenses to sit deeper inside the body without hitting the mirror.
  • Instant-Return Mirror: While early Hasselblad users faced "viewfinder blackout" until they wound the film, the S2A featured an instant-return mirror that automatically reset immediately after exposure, providing a constant view of the subject.
  • Nikkor & Zenzanon Optics: Lacking his own lens factory initially, Yoshino partnered with Nikon to produce a line of world-class optics. The standard 75mm f/2.8 Nikkor-P is renowned for its exceptional sharpness and micro-contrast, rivaling the best European glass of the era.
  • Modular Film Backs: The S2A features highly sophisticated interchangeable backs that allow users to switch between 120 and 220 film mid-roll. The system is uniquely interlocked, allowing the back to be removed or installed regardless of whether the shutter is cocked.

Technical Characteristics

  • Format: 6x6cm square negatives on 120 or 220 roll film.
  • Standard Lens: 75mm f/2.8 Nikkor-P (approx. 45mm equivalent in 35mm format).
  • Shutter: Fully mechanical vertical-travel focal plane shutter; speeds from 1s to 1/1000s + B.
  • Focusing: Removable helicoid system that can be swapped for specialized bellows or macro attachments.
  • Viewfinder: Interchangeable waist-level finder with pop-up magnifier; compatible with various prism and TTL metered finders.
  • Construction: Robust steel and chrome body, weighing approximately 1.8–2.0 kg (with lens and back).

Fun Fact

The Zenza Bronica S2A is famous for its thunderous shutter sound, often compared to the "slamming of a car door". This is due to the complex mechanical sequence of the mirror sliding down, the auxiliary shutters opening, and the focal plane curtains firing. While not the choice for discreet street photography, the "clunk" is considered by many enthusiasts as one of the most satisfying tactile experiences in all of film photography.

Frequently Asked Questions

OUR CAMERAS

A film format basically represents the size of the film. The most popular film formats are 35mm, medium format (120/220), or large format (4x5, 8x10). We sell 35mm cameras (compact, rangefinder and SLR ones) as well as medium format ones.

From flea markets to collectors, passing by friends and private sellers, we carefully handpick our cameras from different sources. We prefer to select used vintage cameras to give them a second life, although we sometimes sell new cameras that come in their original box.

We take great pride in ensuring that every camera and lens we offer has undergone meticulous revision and repair by our team of expert technicians. Our dedicated professionals possess a wealth of knowledge and experience in the field, allowing them to carefully inspect, evaluate, and repair each camera to guarantee they’re in excellent working condition when they land in your hands.

With our commitment to quality and expertise, you can trust that the camera you purchase from us has been carefully revised, and repaired to provide you with a reliable and enjoyable shooting experience.

Several factors are considered when calculating our prices to ensure a fair and competitive offering:

  • Market Price: We assess the current market value of the camera and lens models, taking into consideration factors such as demand, availability, and overall market trends. This helps us establish a price that aligns with the prevailing market conditions.
  • Camera Condition and Revisions: The price reflects the cost of revising and repairing the cameras and lenses to ensure they are in excellent working condition. We invest in thorough inspections and any necessary repairs to provide you with cameras that function optimally.
  • Brand and Model Reputation: The reputation and desirability of the camera brand and model also influence the pricing. Cameras from renowned brands or those known for their exceptional features or craftsmanship may have a higher price point due to their perceived value.
  • Rarity and Collectibility: If a camera is rare or has collectible value due to its age, limited production, or historical significance, it may be priced accordingly to reflect its unique attributes and desirability among collectors.
  • Customer Value: We strive to offer competitive pricing while ensuring customers receive a fair value for their investment.

By considering these factors, we establish a fair price that ultimately provides our customers with a comprehensive and satisfying package.
