Introduced in the early 1970s, the Polaroid SX-70 Land Camera was a first for instant photography and instant SLR design. Conceived under Land’s vision for instant imaging that didn’t require peeling or messy chemistry, it brought true through-the-lens composition and focus to an easy-to-carry camera using integral film.

This original folding SLR features a 116 mm f/8 glass lens with four elements and manual focus through a reflex viewing system, letting you frame and adjust focus with precision rare in instant formats. Exposure is handled automatically by an electronic program with variable shutter speeds (from about 1/180 s to long exposures in low light) and an aperture range that opens creative control.

Power comes from the battery built into each film pack, so you don’t need to worry about separate cells. A simple lighten/darken control lets you make fine tweaks on the fly. Flash support comes via a flashbar socket compatible with classic Polaroid flash units (or accessories), giving extra flexibility in dim environments.

The body combines a folding metal frame with leatherette covering, creating a design that collapses flat for transport yet opens into a fully functional SLR once you’re ready to shoot. While lacking later convenience features like built-in tripod sockets or strap lugs found on the Alpha upgrades, this original SX-70 captures the pure essence of Polaroid’s breakthrough in instant imaging.

SX-70 to 600 CONVERSION

The SX-70, made more adaptable.

Polaroid SX-70 cameras were originally engineered for SX-70 film, a low ISO film that requires plenty of light to produce well-exposed images. That is part of the magic of these cameras, but it can also make them challenging to use indoors or in softer lighting.

A 600 conversion modifies the internal electronics of the SX-70 so it can properly expose 600 film, which is much more light-sensitive. After the conversion, the camera will be calibrated specifically for 600 film and will no longer shoot SX-70 film.

This is not an external accessory or temporary adjustment. It is a precise internal modification that permanently adapts the camera to a different film sensitivity.

Frequently Asked Questions

OUR CAMERAS

A film format basically represents the size of the film. The most popular film formats are 35mm, medium format (120/220), or large format (4x5, 8x10). We sell 35mm cameras (compact, rangefinder and SLR ones) as well as medium format ones.

From flea markets to collectors, passing by friends and private sellers, we carefully handpick our cameras from different sources. We prefer to select used vintage cameras to give them a second life, although we sometimes sell new cameras that come in their original box.

We take great pride in ensuring that every camera and lens we offer has undergone meticulous revision and repair by our team of expert technicians. Our dedicated professionals possess a wealth of knowledge and experience in the field, allowing them to carefully inspect, evaluate, and repair each camera to guarantee they’re in excellent working condition when they land in your hands.

With our commitment to quality and expertise, you can trust that the camera you purchase from us has been carefully revised, and repaired to provide you with a reliable and enjoyable shooting experience.

Several factors are considered when calculating our prices to ensure a fair and competitive offering:

  • Market Price: We assess the current market value of the camera and lens models, taking into consideration factors such as demand, availability, and overall market trends. This helps us establish a price that aligns with the prevailing market conditions.
  • Camera Condition and Revisions: The price reflects the cost of revising and repairing the cameras and lenses to ensure they are in excellent working condition. We invest in thorough inspections and any necessary repairs to provide you with cameras that function optimally.
  • Brand and Model Reputation: The reputation and desirability of the camera brand and model also influence the pricing. Cameras from renowned brands or those known for their exceptional features or craftsmanship may have a higher price point due to their perceived value.
  • Rarity and Collectibility: If a camera is rare or has collectible value due to its age, limited production, or historical significance, it may be priced accordingly to reflect its unique attributes and desirability among collectors.
  • Customer Value: We strive to offer competitive pricing while ensuring customers receive a fair value for their investment.

By considering these factors, we establish a fair price that ultimately provides our customers with a comprehensive and satisfying package.

Polaroid SX-70

Polaroid released several versions of the classic SX‑70 during its original production run, and while they all share the same iconic folding SLR design, each variant adds or changes a few features:

SX‑70 Land (Original): this is the base version of the SX‑70 that started it all. It offers fully manual focus through the rangefinder system built into the viewfinder and all the classic design elements that made the SX‑70 famous — folding body, glass lens, automatic exposure, and the split‑image focusing aid.

SX‑70 Land Alpha: the Alpha models took the original design and added a few practical upgrades. These include strap lugs, a tripod socket, and often a slightly more refined focusing setup. It’s essentially a more user‑friendly version of the original without changing the core shooting experience. They’re are sometimes referred to as Alpha 1, but functionally they’re the same family.

SX‑70 Land Sonar: the Sonar version builds on the Alpha improvements by adding an ultrasonic autofocus system. That means instead of focusing manually, the camera uses sound waves to measure distance and pre‑focus for you. You can still focus manually if you want, but the Sonar system makes it easier to grab sharp shots quickly, especially in dynamic situations.

SX-70 film was originally made for the SX-70 camera and has a lower light sensitivity (ISO 160). That means it needs bright light to expose properly. 600 film is faster (ISO 640), which makes it more versatile in everyday light (indoors, outdoors, mixed lighting) without relying as much on flash or tripod.

The conversion recalibrates the camera’s exposure control so it measures and times the shutter for 600 film sensitivity. Internally we access the exposure circuitry and adjust it so the shutter closes at the right moment for correct exposure with ISO 640 film. The viewfinder, focusing system, and shooting experience stay true to the SX-70 design, just adapted for 600 film.

No. The conversion adjusts the camera’s exposure and metering system for 600 film only. After conversion the camera is calibrated specifically for ISO 640 film and cannot be switched back to SX-70 film.

Yes, we offer Polaroid 600 color film. You can add it to your order directly.

Every camera undergoes a complete restoration before listing:

  • The camera is fully disassembled to its base components
  • We verify the form and function of all mechanical and electronic parts
  • All optical and viewing elements are cleaned
  • The exterior components are polished
  • We apply new genuine leather replacement coverings

  • Its features and controls: determine if the camera has the functionality you need, such as manual exposure control, manual or autofocus, Aperture priority shooting mode and multiple exposure capability.
  • Camera ergonomics: consider how the camera feels in your hands. A comfortable grip and accessible controls are crucial, especially for longer shooting sessions.
